Drama Prime Time Report – 05/13~05/16

‘Sennyu Tantei Tokage’ (TBS)

The two most popular dramas of this season have already made headlines this week.

‘Galileo‘ (Fuji TV) finally showed it’s true strength stripped off all of the bonuses with its fifth episode, which recorded a plummet of 3.0%. There wasn’t any other program that was particularly strong that day, so you can’t put the blame on the tough competition. However, it’s still easy to figure out why it suddenly lost that many viewers.

The first two episodes naturally recorded very high ratings due to the initial interest and popularity of Fukuyama Masaharu. The second and third episodes aired during the Golden Week, so more people than usual had the time to stay home and watch a drama during golden time. Now both of those bonuses are gone and the drama dropped below the 20% mark for the first time. Moreover, the cases for the fourth and fifth episode weren’t exactly the most interesting ones, especially since the drama writer and the producers decided to make some significant changes to the original story.

Of course there are also those people who keep on blaming the cast, Yoshitaka Yuriko in particularly, and the special guests. It would be amazing if ‘Galileo’ was still going to keep its season-average above the 20% mark, but unfortunately that will be a very difficult goal.

‘Last Cinderella‘ (Fuji TV) also made it into the news for scratching the 15% mark for the first time after slowly yet gradually increasing ratings over the past weeks. Fuji TV also released a short compilation containing some of the more “sensual” scenes so far in the drama and it reached more than 100,000 views in just one week. They sure know their viewers and how to cater to them.

As for the rest of the dramas that aired from Monday until Thursday: The only noteworthy changes were recorded by ‘Iryu Sousa 3‘ (TV Asahi) with a plus of 2.4%, ‘Keiji 110 Kilo‘ (TV Asahi) with a rise of 2.3%, and ‘Kamo, Kyoto e Iku.‘ (Fuji TV) with a fall of 1.5%.

(NTV is the only network that still discloses all of their ratings on a daily base. If anything, the other networks only reveal the ratings for their dramas regularly.)

Drama Prime Time Report – 05/10~05/12

‘Otenki Oneesan’ (TV Asahi)

It was a mediocre weekend for the dramas.

Two out of the four prime time spring dramas improved compared to the previous weekend. ‘Otenki Oneesan‘ (TV Asahi) recorded a rise of 0.9% and ‘TAKE FIVE‘ (TBS) had a gain of merely 0.6%. The other two dramas lost viewers, among which ‘35 Sai no Koukousei‘ (NTV) received the biggest blow with a loss of 1.8%.

Saturday featured two drama special highlights, including Nakai Masahiro’s ‘Aji Ichimonme‘ (TV Asahi) and the always popular semi-annual omnibus drama ‘Yonimo Kimyo na Monogatari‘. More details about the cast of the latter can be found below.

Drama Prime Time Report – 05/06~05/09

‘Kazoku Game’ (Fuji TV)

Not many noteworthy changes were recorded in the ratings department for the first half of this week.

Among the positive developments were ‘Kamo, Kyoto e Iku.‘ (Fuji TV) with a gain of 1.7% and ‘Kazoku Game‘ (Fuji TV) with a gain of 1.1%. The former also improved its season-average a bit, just like ‘Last Cinderella‘ (Fuji TV), ‘Kasuka na Kanojo‘ (Fuji TV), and ‘Daini Gakusho‘ (NHK).

This week’s episode of ‘Last Cinderella’ recorded a rating of 14.9%, which could mean that it’s going to crack the 15% mark soon.

The only two real losers of those four days were ‘Keiji 110 Kilo‘ (TV Asahi) with a decrease of 2.2% and ‘Kumo no Kaidan‘ (NTV), which lost 1.1% compared to the previous week.

(NTV is the only network that still discloses all of their ratings on a daily base. If anything, the other networks only reveal the ratings for their dramas regularly.)

‘Doubles ~ Futari no Keiji’ (TV Asahi)

The lack of viewers during the Golden Week holidays influenced the ratings, but the unfavorable placing of the public holidays lessened the effect a bit this year.

There was even one drama that gained quite a few viewers this weekend. ‘Yae no Sakura‘, NHK’s taiga drama, managed to gain 2.0% this Sunday and reached a viewer rating above 15% for the first time in months.

Most of the other dramas’ ratings either only went up or declined by less than 1.0%. ‘Keiji 110 Kilo‘ (TV Asahi) and ‘Doubles ~ Futari no Keiji‘ (TV Asahi) were the biggest losers with a drop of 1.2%.

(NTV is the only network that still discloses all of their ratings on a daily base. If anything, the other networks only reveal the ratings for their dramas regularly.)

Drama Prime Time Report – 04/29~05/01

‘Kasuka na Kanojo’ (Fuji TV)

The Golden Week is difficult for dramas since they often have to compete against all kinds of special shows that serve as viewer magnets for the respective networks.

Let’s take a look at the positive trends first. The winners in terms of weekly improvement are ‘Iryu Sousa 3‘ (TV Asahi), ‘Kasuka na Kanojo‘ (Fuji TV), and ‘Daini Gakusho‘ (NHK). However, that doesn’t mean that all of them are doing well. The season average shows that ‘Iryu Sousa 3′ is still losing ground and lags behind its previous two seasons.

The already strong Monday drama ‘Galileo‘ (Fuji TV) actually managed to gain some viewers as well and recorded another fantastic rating of 21.1% with its third episode.

A disappointing development was experienced by ‘Kazoku Game‘ (Fuji TV) this week. It lost 2.6% and completely undid last week’s nice increase of viewers. ‘Kamo, Kyoto e Iku.‘ (Fuji TV) also lost more than 1% and fell below the 10% mark again.

Thursday ratings will be included in the next report due to the Golden Week public holidays.

Drama Prime Time Report – 04/22~04/25

‘Last Cinderella’ (Fuji TV)

One more prime time drama and a couple of late-night dramas have premiered this week.

The new Thursday drama ‘Keiji 110 Kilo‘ (TV Asahi) starring Ishizuka Hidehiko recorded a very nice start with a rating of 14.1%. The new late-night dramas include ‘Hokago Groove‘ (TBS) starring Takanashi Rin, ‘Monsieur!‘ (TBS) starring EXILE’s KEIJI, and ‘Tank Top Fighter‘ (TBS) starring Ono Erena.

A couple of prime time dramas recorded slight improvements this week. The biggest winners were ‘Kamo, Kyoto e Iku.‘ (Fuji TV) with a gain of 1.6% and ‘Kazoku Game‘ (Fuji TV) which increased by 1.7%. There were also two winners who remained steady in terms of ratings. One of those two dramas was ‘Last Cinderella‘ (Fuji TV), which maintained a nice rating of 14.4%. Of course the other one is ‘Galileo‘ (Fuji TV), which lost more than 2% compared to its premiere, but it still managed to stay above the 20% mark. The last drama that recorded ratings higher than 20% for two consecutive weeks was ‘Kaseifu no Mita‘ (NTV) in 2011.

Unfortunately there were also dramas that experienced negative developments. The ratings for ‘Iryu Sousa 3‘ (TV Asahi) and ‘Doubles ~ Futari no Keiji‘ (TV Asahi) plummeted with losses of more than 4%. ‘Kakusho ~ Keishicho Sousa 3 Ka‘ (TBS) also dropped below the 10% mark with a fall of 1.4%

(NTV is the only network that still discloses all of their ratings on a daily base. If anything, the other networks only reveal the ratings for their dramas regularly.)

Drama Prime Time Report – 04/15~04/18

‘Galileo’ (Fuji TV)

A total of 8 new dramas premiered from Monday to Thursday this week.

Fuji TV’s Monday drama ‘Galileo‘ (season 2) – starring heartthrob Fukuyama Masaharu and a new heroine played by Yoshitaka Yuriko – attracted the most viewers with a great rating of 22.6%. Many viewers also swooned over the male duo Ito Hideaki and Sakaguchi Kenji in the Thursday crime drama ‘Doubles ~ Futari no Keiji‘ (TV Asahi), which also did pretty well with a rating of 15.8%. Meanwhile, the third season of ‘Iryu Sousa 3‘ (TV Asahi) recorded a nice rating of 14.6% as well.

Two more dramas have started the spring season with viewer ratings above 10%. ‘Kakusho ~ Keishicho Sousa 3 Ka‘ (TBS) – starring Takahashi Katsumi and Eikura Nana – recorded a rating of 10.9% on Monday, while ‘Kazoku Game‘ (Fuji TV) – starring Arashi’s Sakurai Sho – didn’t quite meet expectations with a mediocre rating of 12.0%.

‘Kumo no Kaidan‘ (NTV) starring Hasegawa Hiroki and ‘Sennyu Tantei Tokage‘ (TBS) starring Matsuda Shota failed to reach a double-digit rating with their respective first episodes.

As for the dramas that already celebrated their premieres in the week before, ‘Last Cinderella‘ (Fuji TV) was the only prime time drama that actually gained viewers with its second episode. ‘Kamo, Kyoto e Iku.‘ (Fuji TV) and ‘Kasuka na Kanojo‘ both lost viewers, while the former has dropped below the 10% mark already.

Drama Prime Time Report – 04/08~04/14

’35 Sai no Koukousei’ (NTV)

More than a handful of spring dramas have premiered last week.

Fuji TV unveiled both of their Tuesday prime time dramas on the same date and both of them began with a mediocre start. Neither ‘Kamo, Kyoto e Iku.‘ – starring Matsushita Nao – nor ‘Kasuka na Kanojo‘ – starring Katori Shingo, were able to impress with great ratings. The other networks were still busy airing variety specials, so the viewers were evenly spread across them. Both dramas at least managed to stay above the 10% mark with their premieres.

On Wednesday, NTV aired the special drama ‘ST Keishicho Kagaku Tokuso Han‘ starring Fujiwara Tatsuya, Okada Masaki, and Shida Mirai. The eccentric bunch of detectives recorded a rating of 10.5%. TV Tokyo also aired the first episode of their midnight food-porn detective drama ‘Meshibana Deka Tachibana‘ starring Sato Jiro. As usual, ratings are hard to come by for this network these days.

The spring premieres continued on Thursday with the first episode of ‘Last Cinderella‘ (Fuji TV) – starring Shinohara Ryoko, Miura Haruma, and Fujiki Naohito, which was among the better starts with a good rating of 13.3%. However, did the first episode offer enough to make the viewers tune in again this week?

Surprisingly Takei Emi still hasn’t reached the point where the viewers in Japan feel overly exposed to her image. Her new drama ‘Otenki Oneesan‘ (TV Asahi) still sparked a lot of curiosity and helped it to record a decent rating of 11.9% in its 11:00pm time slot on Friday. It’s the best start in this time slot since the ‘Hagane no Onna‘ (12.7%) in spring 2010.

Meanwhile, TV Tokyo added more eye candy to their late-night line-up. The lewd drama ‘Minna! Esper Dayo!‘ – starring Sometani Shota, Kaho, and Mano Erina – shows how useful telekinesis can be, although the protagonist himself was only got gifted with telepathy. Definitely an intriguing venture into the TV drama world by famed movie director Sono Shion. The other drama, ‘Vampire Heaven‘ – starring Omasa Aya, Honda Tsubasa, Hiraoka Yuta – is quite an adorable show with two clumsy blood-loving protagonists.

NHK’s mini drama ‘Goen Hunter‘ flopped on Saturday despite starring popular actress Mizuki Alisa. It only recorded a rating of 4.4%. The premiere of ‘35 Sai no Koukousei‘ (NTV) did much better with 14.7%, but nothing less was expected by the rating queen Yonekura Ryoko. The special episode of ‘Legal High‘ (Fuji TV) – starring Sakai Masato and Aragaki Yui – also did well with 13.5%. Furthermore Fuji TV can be satisfied with the first episode of ‘Machigawarechatta Otoko‘ – starring Furuta Arata and Nakamaru Yuichi – which recorded a good rating of 8.8% in its 11:00pm time slot.

On Sunday, ‘Sora Tobu Kouhoushitsu‘ (TBS) – starring Aragaki Yui, Ayano Go, and Shibata Kyouhei – managed to attract plenty of viewers for a good rating of 14.0%. Of course it cannot compete with some of those epic dramas that pushed this time slot to ratings of 20% and higher, but maybe it can still maintain a pretty good level now that Fuji TV has decided to stay away from dramas on Sunday.

(NTV is the only network that still discloses all of their ratings on a daily base. If anything, the other networks only reveal the ratings for their dramas regularly.)

Drama Prime Time Report – 04/01~04/07

‘Rich Man, Poor Woman in New York’ (Fuji TV)

Most of the spring dramas will finally premiere this or next week.

As for the previous week, there were already a couple of premieres of midnight and late-night dramas. ‘Detarame Hero‘ (NTV) – starring Sato Ryuta – aired its first episode on Thursday and recorded a rating of 3.6%, which is somewhat of an underwhelming result compared to the previous midnight dramas on NTV.

Other spring premieres included the delinquent drama filled with young male and female idols – ‘BAD BOYS J‘ (NTV) and the latest installment in the popular tokusatsu series ‘GARO’ – ‘GARO ~Yami wo Terasu Mono~‘ (TV Tokyo).

The prime time was dominated by all sorts of variety specials, but there were also a couple of special dramas (and drama specials). The most popular drama special in terms of ratings was ‘Rich Man, Poor Woman in New York‘ (Fuji TV) – starring Oguri Shun and Ishihara Satomi – on Monday with 15.3%. However, that’s only because Fuji TV has yet to disclose the ratings of the two-parter ‘Onna Nobunaga‘ – starring Amami Yuki – that aired on Friday and Saturday.

‘Reverse ~ Keishicho Sousa Ikka Team Z‘ (NTV) – starring Matsuzaka Tori and Anne – was also quite popular with a rating of 14.6% during the Friday prime time. The ‘GTO’ remake starring EXILE’s AKIRA delivered another special episode dubbed ‘GTO Graduation Special‘ (Fuji TV) with a mediocre rating of 10.2%.

Meanwhile, ‘Yae no Sakura‘ (NHK) is still struggling to get back to its strength during its main time slot on Sunday. This week’s rating of 11.7% is a new negative record for this year’s taiga drama.

Note: The next few Drama Prime Time Reports will be released in a weekly rhythm due to the lack of dramas until the start of the spring season.
